Homeless Jesus Statue by Timothy Schmalz

Inspired by Matthew: 25, this sculpture is a representation that suggests Christ is with the most marginalized in our society. The Christ figure is shrouded in a blanket the only indication that it is Jesus is the visible wounds on the feet. The life-size version of the work has enough room that someone is able to sit on the bench. This solid resin-stone cast is coated in a realistic bronze finish and is mounted on a solid matt black base. Timothy personally sculpts every original small masterpiece complete with his signature or monogram. Each replica is detailed by hand to the exacting standards of this modern day master sculptor.

Sculpture acts for many as a gateway into the viewer's own self understanding and spirituality. The more powerful the representation of the art, the more powerful the invitation becomes.

To create work that has the strength to both focus and then hold one's attention, thereby deepening the understanding of the subject being presented - this describes my purpose as a sculptor.

"I am devoted to creating meaningful sculpture about meaningful things. I describe my sculptures as being visual signs. Saint Gregory the Great wrote that 'art is for the illiterate'; the use of images was an extremely effective way to educate the general population. Our contemporary culture is in the same state today - not because of illiteracy, but because people are too busy to read." - Timothy Schmalz

Homeless Jesus

I first saw this statue at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, Arizona and fell in love with it. My two grandchildren work for a non-profit organization for the homeless in Salem, Oregon, and I’ve seen through them how how much of a heart they have for homeless people. With the homeless crisis we have in this country, this statue is a wonderful reminder that homeless people are God’s children too.
