On Christmas Eve, the legend goes, a peasant girl from Mexico was on her way to church to see Christ in the nativity. Because she had no gift to bring to humbly lay before the King, she picked some weeds along the way and shaped them into a bouquet. When she arrived her face was sad, embarrassed by the gift she had; she whispered and lowered eyes, felt she must apologize. "I wish that I could offer more, but I'm a child, and I am poor. My love for You is greater than the weeks I'm holding in my hands." And as she whispered her last word, a wonderful miracle soon occurred; suddenly her common weeds blossomed into bright red leaves! A flower painted red and green, the loveliest flower she'd ever seen, shaped like the Star of Bethlehem, the perfect gift to give to Him. Our gifts to God however small are honored when we give our all; Christ can use them for His glory just like this miraculous story. And so this flower of long ago from the peasant girl of Mexico is now a cherished Christmas sight, this Flower of the Holy Night.
