Ave, Regina Caelorum

Ave, Regina caelorum,
Ave, Domina Angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

V. Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata.
R. Da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos.

Oremus. Concede, misericors Deus, fragilitati
nostrae praesidium: ut, qui sanctae Dei
Genitricis memoriam agimus; intercessionis eius
auxilio, a nostris iniquitatibus resurgamus. Per
eundem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Hail, O Queen of Heaven

Welcome, O Queen of Heaven.
Welcome, O Lady of Angels
Hail! thou root, hail! thou gate
From whom unto the world,
a light has arisen:

Rejoice, O glorious Virgin,
Lovely beyond all others,
Farewell, most beautiful maiden,
And pray for us to Christ.

V. Allow me to praise thee, O sacred Virgin.
R. Against thy enemies give me strength.

Grant unto us, O merciful God, a defense
against our weakness, that we who remember
the holy Mother of God, by the help of her
intercession, may rise from our iniquities,
through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The great seasonal Marian antiphons are four beautiful and ancient prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They come from
the Divine Office, office of Compline, the last of the sung
hours of the day; and they are said or sung immediately
before going to sleep.

The Marian antiphons are “seasonal” because they shift
according to the liturgical seasons of the year. Each of the four
also has a simple tone Gregorian melody that accompanies
the Latin text.

When sung at the conclusion of Mass, only the anthem is
sung, the anthem is in bold text.

Alma Redemptoris Mater
The Alma Redemptoris Mater is sung from the first Sunday of
Advent until the Feast of the Purification on February 2 (the
original ending date of the Christmas season).

Ave Regina Caelorum
The Ave Regina Caelorum is sung from Candlemas Day (the
Feast of the Presentation, February 2) through Wednesday of
Holy Week (the Wednesday before Easter).

Regina Caeli
The Regina Caeli is sung throughout Eastertide, from Easter
Day through Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter.

Salve Regina
The Salve Regina is sung from the day after Pentecost Sunday
until the first Sunday of Advent.
